Values and Orientation B1: the 7 topics and how to learn them

5 min read · Updated on 21 June 2026

The values part of the Integration Exam B1 worries many people more than the German itself — yet it is very learnable, because the questions come from a fixed, official catalogue. If you know the topics and practise in a targeted way, you have a clear advantage here.

In this guide you will find the seven topic areas, a simple study strategy and a free trainer you can use right away.

The 7 topic areas in the values part

Values and Orientation knowledge covers everyday life in Austria and the core values of living together. You should know these areas:

  • Living together in Austria — rules, consideration, neighbourhood.
  • Basic and civil rights as well as democracy and the rule of law.
  • Equality of women and men.
  • Health and the Austrian healthcare system.
  • Education, school and training.
  • Work, profession and important offices such as the AMS.
  • Respect, diversity and dealing with conflicts.

How the questions are structured

The questions are multiple-choice: you pick the correct one from several answers. Some questions have two options, others three. It is rarely about memorising numbers, and mostly about correctly understanding values and rules.

That is exactly why a mix of reading and active practice works best: you quickly spot the typical mistakes in reasoning and get used to the wording.

A simple study strategy

Do not learn all questions in one go, but topic by topic. That keeps the material manageable and you remember the connections better.

  • Take one or two topic areas per study day.
  • Practise actively with questions instead of just reading — mistakes are your best teacher.
  • Repeat the topics where you made mistakes again after a few days.
  • At the end, do a mixed run like in the real exam.
