Listening at a glance
Hören is part of the written exam in the ÖSD Zertifikat Deutsch Österreich B1 (ZDÖ B1) and takes about 30 minutes. You hear texts from everyday life in Austria and decide for 20 statements (41–60): true or false. Listening is worth up to 75 of the 225 points; there is no separate pass mark for Listening alone.
You hear task 1 only once, tasks 2 and 3 twice. Before each task you get a moment to read the statements: 30 seconds for tasks 1 and 3, one minute for task 2. Use that time and listen specifically for the information asked for.
Which audio texts come up?
Task 1: Opinions
Five people say something about one topic. You hear each statement only once.
Task 2: A radio conversation
A longer conversation from the radio, with ten statements. You hear it twice.
Task 3: Short texts
Five short texts, such as a weather report or a voicemail message. You hear each one twice.
How to get the most points in listening
You do not improve listening comprehension by “listening more”, but by strategy. Four things make the difference:
- Read the tasks BEFORE listening, you know what to listen for
- Focus on key words and numbers, do not try to understand every word
- In tasks 2 and 3: mark answers on the first listen, check them on the second
- Never leave anything blank, when in doubt, mark an answer

How often do I hear the texts?
You hear task 1 only once, tasks 2 and 3 twice. So task 1 needs your full concentration; in the others, use the first listen for orientation.
How long does Listening take?
About 30 minutes, including the time to read the statements. On paper there is no separate answer sheet: you mark your answers directly on the task sheets.
