Lesen & Sprachbausteine at a glance
The written exam of the ÖSD Zertifikat Deutsch Österreich B1 (ZDÖ B1) usually starts with Lesen & Sprachbausteine. You have 90 minutes for it. In three reading tasks you match headlines, answer questions on a newspaper article and find matching ads. Then come two Sprachbausteine, gapped texts on grammar and vocabulary. That makes 40 items and up to 105 of the 225 points.
The biggest hurdle is usually time. If you read every text word by word, you will not finish; what counts is targeted skimming and finding specific information. And not every answer is worth the same: in Reading 1 and 2 a correct answer brings 5 points, a gap in the Sprachbausteine 1.5.
Which texts and tasks come up?
Task 1: Headlines
Five short texts, ten headlines. Exactly one fits each text.
Task 2: Newspaper article
A longer article with five questions, each with three answers (A, B, C).
Task 3: Ads
Ten situations, twelve ads. If no ad fits, you write 0.
Sprachbausteine 1 and 2
Two gapped texts with ten gaps each: one with three options per gap, one with a word list.

How long does Reading take?
90 minutes for Lesen & Sprachbausteine together, that is for 40 items. The task sheets give guide times: about 20 minutes for Reading 1, 35 for Reading 2, 15 for Reading 3 and 10 each for the two Sprachbausteine.

Texts from everyday life in Austria: short texts with headlines, a newspaper article and ads, plus gapped texts in the Sprachbausteine, such as a letter replying to an advert.
Do I have to understand every word?
No. It is enough to find the information asked for. You can often infer unknown words from context.
