The Writing module at a glance
In the Schreiben module of the ÖSD B1 exam you write several texts in about 60 minutes — for example a personal or semi-formal message. It is scored out of 100 points; the module is passed from 60 %.
What matters is not just error-free language but above all task fulfilment: covering all the given points, responding appropriately to the situation and structuring the text clearly.
Which writing tasks come up?
Personal message
An informal email/message to friends or acquaintances — e.g. inviting, declining, reporting.
Semi-formal message
A message in a semi-formal tone — e.g. a request, complaint or enquiry.
Responding to prompts
You get a set of points you must cover — completely and appropriately for the situation.
What counts? The assessment criteria
Examiners assess your text against several criteria. If you only focus on grammar, you give away points — task fulfilment and structure count just as much.
- Task fulfilment — all points covered, appropriate to the situation
- Structure & coherence — a clear thread, sensible connections
- Vocabulary — appropriate and varied enough
- Structures — grammar and accuracy
Tips for the writing module
Tick off every prompt
Go through the prompts and make sure every point appears in your text — missing one is the most common way to lose points.
Get the register right
Mind the tone: personal (du) or semi-formal (Sie). Choose a fitting salutation and closing.
Connect instead of listing
Use connectors (weil, deshalb, trotzdem …) so the text flows instead of being a list of single sentences.
