Overview

What is the ÖSD B1 exam?

The ÖSD Zertifikat B1 (ÖSD = Austrian German Language Diploma) is an official proof of German at level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). At B1 you understand the main points of familiar topics, can communicate in everyday situations and write simple connected texts.

The exam is modular: it consists of the four modules Lesen (Reading), Hören (Listening), Schreiben (Writing) and Sprechen (Speaking). Each module is scored separately and — if needed — can be retaken individually. That lets you prepare precisely for the parts you still find hard.

Exam format

Structure of the ÖSD B1 exam: the four modules

The exam consists of four modules. Each tests a different skill and can be trained on its own.

approx. 65 min

Lesen

Several texts (ads, emails, articles) with reading-comprehension tasks.

approx. 40 min

Hören

Announcements, conversations and short reports with listening tasks.

approx. 60 min

Schreiben

Several writing tasks, e.g. a personal or semi-formal message.

approx. 15 min

Sprechen

Three conversation tasks — usually as a paired exam: introduce, plan, discuss.

Scoring

Scoring and passing: 60 % per module

Each of the four modules is scored out of 100 points. A module is passed from 60 % (60 points). Because the exam is modular, you only retake the modules you failed — passed modules remain valid.

  • Pass mark: 60 % per module
