Overview

The reading module at a glance

Listening and reading are scored together – for B1 you need 33 of 45 points. The biggest hurdle is time: targeted searching beats word-by-word reading.

The five parts

Which texts and tasks come up?

Part 1 – Signpost

Read a signpost, e.g. in a department store or at the station, and find the right place.

Part 2 – Match the ads

Match short ads to the right situations – one task has no solution (X).

Part 3 – Press texts

Three short texts, each with a true/false statement and a multiple-choice question.

Part 5 – Sprachbausteine

A letter with gaps: grammar and vocabulary in context (a, b or c).

Strategy

How to score the most in reading

You improve reading mainly through technique and timing. Four things help:

  • Read the task first, then scan the text for it
  • Skim for the overview, scan for the details
  • For Sprachbausteine, watch the grammar – case, verb form, connector
  • Budget your time per section – leave nothing blank
