Many people face the same question: do I need the ÖSD Certificate B1 or the ÖIF Integration Exam B1? The names sound similar, but the difference matters — and it decides what you have to prepare for.
The short answer: it depends on what you need the certificate for. Here is the difference explained simply.
The core difference in one sentence
The ÖSD Certificate B1 is a pure language exam. The ÖIF Integration Exam B1 tests the language at the same level — but additionally also the Values and Orientation knowledge about Austria.
So when you hear someone mention "B1 with values," they mean the Integration Exam.
ÖSD Certificate B1 — the pure language exam
The ÖSD Certificate B1 (ZB1) tests four skills: Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. It is an internationally recognised language certificate and is modular — individual parts can be retaken under certain conditions.
This exam fits if you need a recognised proof of your German, for example for work, study or as a general language certificate.
ÖIF Integration Exam B1 — language plus values
The Integration Exam B1 has the same language requirement at B1 level, but adds the values part. It fulfils Module 2 of the Integration Agreement.
It is therefore usually the right choice when it comes to residence — for example for an unlimited residence title or as a step toward citizenship.
Which exam fits you?
Ask yourself a simple question: do I only need a language proof, or is it about my residence title?
- Only a language proof (work, study, general) → the ÖSD Certificate B1 is often enough.
- Residence, Module 2, naturalisation → usually the ÖIF Integration Exam B1 with the values part.
- Unsure? Ask the authority or an advice centre which proof is specifically required.
Good to know
Which exam is binding in your case depends on your residence title and the relevant authority. Do not rely on hearsay alone — clarify the exact proof officially before you register.
The good news: the language part is at B1 level for both. When you train your German, you are always working in the right direction — and for the Integration Exam only the values part is added.
