There are three things you want to know before you register: what the exam costs, where you take it and how early you need to sort it out. That is exactly what this article answers.
One note first: every exam centre sets its own prices and dates. The figures here are a guide, and what your centre tells you is what counts.
How much does the exam cost?
Expect to pay around 150 euros. Depending on the provider and the federal state, the amount can be a little higher or a little lower.
You pay the fee each time you take the exam. If you fail, you repeat the whole exam and pay again, plus you wait weeks for the next date. So your first attempt is the cheapest one.
Where do I register?
You take the exam at an approved exam centre. To find the ones near you, use the exam centre search on sprachportal.at.
You register directly with the centre, usually online or in person. There you can also see the available dates and what you need to register.
How early should you book?
In Vienna and the other big cities, good dates are often gone weeks in advance. Book early, especially if your residence permit is tied to a deadline.
A practical approach: fix your exam date first, then plan backwards. That way you have a set date to work towards, instead of waiting for a free slot.
What should you bring?
A valid official photo ID and your registration confirmation. Your centre will give you the exact list. Leave yourself some extra time and arrive about 15 to 20 minutes early.
The weeks before your exam date are your most valuable resource. Practise the format online, free with 2 keys a day, so that nothing on exam day is new to you.

Does the AMS or the ÖIF pay for it?
Sometimes there is funding or a voucher, for example through the ÖIF or as part of a course. To find out whether this applies to you, it is best to ask the ÖIF, your course provider or the AMS directly.
Do I take language and values on the same day?
Yes, both belong to one single sitting: you take all parts within the same exam appointment, there are no separate dates for language and values. Your exam centre gives you the exact schedule for the day.
What if I have to cancel my exam date?
Cancellations, rebookings and refunds follow your centre’s terms. Read them before you register, so you know where you stand if it happens.
